Sleeve Gastrectomy, a Laparoscopic Surgery for Losing Weight
The sleeve gastrectomy is a surgical process which is done by eliminating the lateral two-thirds of your stomach through the use of a stapling device. It is done on overweight patients that have a body mass index of 40 above. It is performed laparoscopically, which means a small video is placed into the abdomen while the surgeon looks on what he is doing in a separate video monitor. Laparoscopic surgery allows surgeons to see better what they are doing and at the same time have access to key anatomical structures that are required in the surgery. This surgical procedure is not reversible and a permanent one, which is why those who intend to go under the surgery must be mentally ready for this. A person who undergoes sleeve gastrectomy loses a large quantity of their excessive weight through the operation, but if weight loss stops, another procedure, the gastric bypass or the duodenal switch is necessary.
